Choosing the right approach

For babies and infants, the routine is: a few drops of saline first to thin mucus, wait 30 seconds, then gently aspirate. Replaceable filters mean the aspirator stays hygienic for repeat use. For older children and adults, saline sprays alone usually do the job; aspirators come into their own when congestion is too thick to clear by blowing. Hypertonic saline (3%, 6% or 7%) draws more fluid from inflamed tissues than ordinary isotonic saline and is useful when prescribed for nebuliser use.
