Choosing the right product

For routine wax build-up, a few days of olive oil drops will usually soften wax enough to clear naturally. Sprays are easier to apply than dropper bottles and suit anyone who finds dropper use awkward. For swimmers or those prone to ear infections, tea tree formulas add a mild antimicrobial element. Foam plugs give the highest noise reduction; wax plugs mould to the ear canal for sleep and shower use.

Do not use ear drops if you have a perforated eardrum or active infection. If hearing loss or pain persists, see a pharmacist or GP rather than attempting wax removal at home.
