Choosing the right product

For everyday grazes and minor cuts in adults and older children, an antiseptic cream like Savlon is gentle and easy to apply. Germolene's added anaesthetic is useful for stinging wounds, especially in children. TCP suits mouth ulcers and minor skin infections at dilute strength. Milton is the standard for sterilising baby bottles and feeding equipment — not for skin. Surgical spirit hardens skin under callus or where pressure sores might develop.
