Choosing the right strength

For routine nebuliser hydration, eye wash or wound cleansing, isotonic saline (0.9%) matches the body's natural fluid balance and is gentle for repeated use. For congested airways with thick mucus — cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, or post-surgery clearance — hypertonic saline (3%, 6%, 7%) draws fluid into the airway via osmosis to help mucus mobilisation. Sterile single-dose vials are essential for nebuliser and eye use to avoid contamination.
